Mercury carries the caduceus. The symbol of wisdom and alchemy, brother Sun and sister Moon. He is our cruise director. He takes care of communicating and offers service. Under the best of circumstances he likes to stir things up. Best to take your sense of humor in the traveling bag. You know the premise, it is the journey, not the destination? When you set off, you have such glorious expectations and excitement. Then, the roadblocks and misdirection seem to take the joyousness and create frustrations. Remember it is those moments that are the real part of travel. And we all seem to be addicted to movement. Sitting and contemplating is work.
So, with Mercury Retrograde, we are made to take inventory. Offering service is quite different from Mothering. It implies allowing the other to decide what he or she needs. Offering judgement or advice is not as accepted. Do you like being told what to do? Of course, there is a time and place for it. Often, taking criticism is a new pair of uncomfortable, stylish shoes. Service, is exchanging the teacher/student equation. It is the extended family of cousins, aunts, uncles and fellow travelers. The waiter, who perceives your desires before you know it, is subtly a teacher of hospitality. The nurse, who knows you are in better or worse shape than you are aware of, also is allowing you the space to perceive when you are ready. This prescient gift is hard to give. Particularly if movement is your goal.
During the Mercury Moonwalk we are reminded often of these mental needs. Let the new car, computer or television, rest. This happens for three weeks, three times a year. Think of it as a vacation.
