The solstice is when the power of the sun is the most evident. The old meaning is literally to “stand still”. The winter solstice is the most highly celebrated, probably because it is when we need a reason to believe in the ongoing rejuvenation of life. Human beings prefer light and warmth and in the northern hemisphere, it is the shortest day.
The word understanding is also connected as it implies “standing under” to listen and observe. As we are mostly in our own heads, this is not an easy feat. Our emotions cause quick reactions to another’s way of connecting to us. Often it is hard to stay with the moment and not over react. So, standing still, taking a breath, and letting dust settle is the purpose we all strive for.
So many children’s stories describe the dark and the light. Villains and Heroes. As we know when we grow up it is not so simple. We are all a blend. We must struggle with guilt, which implies we did something wrong and praise, which is about our motives being pure. The comic books and Brothers Grimm always make a festival around the telling of the tale. Mulla Nasuradin like the Theater of the Absurd folks, Ionesco and Beckett, twists the illogical (dark), into humor, (light). Geoff Johns, the head of DC comics today has reinvented the Flash, Green Lantern and recognized the need for colorful tongue in cheek.
The number one most popular movie of the 20th century was The Godfather. A mythological tale of the irony of the human condition. Marlon Brando’s quote “I make him an offer, he cannot refuse” The title is about how, we all want the security of someone else’s decisions. Number 7th movie of the 20th century was Star Wars, showing us the possibilities of the future and the endless loop of history. Number 11 is The Wizard of Oz, again looking for the great and all powerful, only to realize, “there is no place like home”, our souls.
The end of the western calendar year is this month of holiday cheer and new beginnings. It is most certainly relying on our early ancestors finding hope with the days and the light getting brighter. The old calendar and new beginnings was about the equinoxes, first day of spring, when light and dark are equal. Odd, as this is when the energy is bursting out, plants and growth, and less about the contemplation. Equal implies harmony and perception. The solstice is an extreme.
